Based on the distinctive 4-wheel wagons built by British Railways, these vehicles were designed specifically for transporting heavy pig iron ingots from blast furnaces to steelworks for further processing.

British Railways constructed around 1,000 of these specialist wagons to handle the demanding task of moving crude iron products across the rail network. The term "pig iron" comes from the ingots themselves, commonly known as "pigs", giving these unusual wagons their memorable name. In later years, a number of the fleet were converted into Coil C wagons, extending their operational life.
